Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) is a weapons officer aboard the destroyer USS John Paul Jones, while his older brother, Stone (Alexander Skarsgård), is the commanding officer of the USS Sampson. Unknown to Alex, Stone or the rest of the U.S. Navy, alien invaders have arrived on Earth with plans to steal Earth's resources. I can understand why this movie didn't do as well as they wanted to at the theaters. It was the name. They marketed it as the game Battleship in live action form. No one could really picture that. And though they advertised a few scenes it just wasn't enough.
I read some where that the director thought it was because there wasn't a big name involved. Um no. Need I say Will Smith and Hancock. It wasn't the casting it was simply that most people thought it was going to be a cheesy movie and yet another game/toy/cartoon gone Hollywood. I, for one, think we were wrong.
I love Battleship. I own the DVD and watch it nearly every time it comes on t.v. Speaking of television, considering the amount of times it has been on tells me that Battleship is a favorite of many. And just as I stated above most comments I have seen as to why they didn't go to the theater to see the movie fall right in line with the whole Battleship game aspect. It's a shame because how they incorporated the game was very clever and not noticeable if you happened to not know how to play the game.
Action movies are one of my favorite genres. It is also one of the few genre of movies I will go to the theater to see. The bass of the explosions, the size of the screen, and just the experience of watching an action movie is different in the theater than it is at home. Anyway, Battleship is an action movie to the tee with explosions, gun fights, aliens, and gadgets.
I'm saying it now and you will see me say it again and again. I do not need a deep and profound plot for me to like an action film. I just need the ACTION. I do not like the physics to add up to how something blows up. I just want to be like "oooh did you see that". Yes, I am that type of action film watcher.
The plot of Battleship is that we (Earth) sent out a signal in to space that surprise was actually received by aliens. These aliens make quick work of destroying certain infrastructure while working to send a signal to where ever it is they are from in an attempt as we the watchers are to assume is to let their leaders know they have arrived and to come on down. The only thing that stands in the way is a small group of American and Japanese naval soliders as well as 3 civilians.
The movie centers around Hopper. An arrogant screw up who only join the Navy because of his brother. Predictably Hopper eventually grows up and learn what responsibility is. Unfortunately, it comes after he get his brother killed. Hopper along with his Japanese adversary turn friend lead the troops to victory.
If you haven't watch the movie yet give it a shot. It has been on t.v. quite a bit. Networks like Spike, TBS, TNT show it. And once it comes it will usually come one 2 other times in that week. So keep a look out.
