Forever Maggie Stiefvater

Forever (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #3)

Forever by Maggie Stiefvater
Series: The Wolves of Mercy Falls #3
Paperback, 496 pages
Published 2011 by Scholastic
ISBN 1407121111 (ISBN13: 9781407121116)
Rating: 3 stars (3.2)

From Goodreads:

Sam has always loved Grace. As a wolf, he watched her from afar. As a boy, he held her in his arms.

Now facing the possibility of a life without her, he will do anything to keep her safe. Even if it means facing his demons. Even if it risks everything he has.

Anything, as long as their love can survive...

My Review:

Many people did not like this book as much as the other two. I must admit that I didn’t like the series at all. I found all three books to be too slow of a pace for me. This book puts up where Linger left off. Grace is now a wolf and Sam is the one waiting for her to shift back. Unfortunately, Isabelle father is still of the rampage about the wolves and has successfully lobbied to kill the wolves left at Mercy Falls. Cole the reluctant smart guy that he is has been experimenting with ways to change forms at will. With Grace in danger Sam is forced to enlist Cole’s help (along with the Sheriff) to get Grace and the other wolves to safety. The ending was lacking.

The way it left some things unexplained made it seems as if a fourth book may come along at some point. This point has not changed my mind about the series. I hope there isn’t a fourth book because I really don’t want to read it. TBR list 4

Plot: 3  Writing: 4  Character: 3  Other 3  Overall Feel 3*

*pace was slow for me but I like Cole’s character. He saved this series for me.

Lusting For Covers #5

Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator

Allegra Fairweather: Paranormal Investigator
By: Janni Nell
Carina Press, June 2010

From Kobobooks:
Allegra Fairweather here. Paranormal investigator. Got problems with specters? Shapeshifters? I'm the woman to call. Just don't call me a Ghostbuster. The last guy who did that ended up flat on his back with my boot at his throat.

With my 99.5% success rate, solving the mystery of a bleeding rose that has sprung up on the shores of Loch Furness should have been an easy gig. But already I've heard the shriek of the local banshee, discovered two bodies (and then lost two bodies), and had a near-death encounter with a three-hundred-year-old ghost. And perhaps most dangerous of all, the hot pub owner who hired me now wants to show me exactly what's under his kilt.

Luckily, I'm ably assisted by my very own guardian angel. I'm grateful for his help-but he's also drop-dead gorgeous. A bit distracting when I've got a mystery to solve, and the clock is ticking...

Unenchanted: An Unfortunate Fairytale by Chanda Hahn

UnEnchanted By: Chanda Hahn
Unenchanted: An Unfortunate Fairytale
By Chanda Hahn
Ebook: pgs. 233
Series: An Unfortunate Fairytale Book 1
Rating: 2 stars (2.4)

From KoboBooks:
Mina Grime is unlucky, unpopular and uncoordinated, but it all changes when she learns she is descended from the Brothers Grimm and has inherited all of their fairytale unfinished business. To break the storybook curse on her family, Mina must relive all of the fairytales…until the very Grimm end.

My Review:
I was going through the Kobo website looking to see what YA books they had. Basically I had some time to kill. I came across Unechanted. It was free so I said what the heck. I liked the concept of the story. As the title and cover (clue #1) suggest this is a fairytale retelling. I am not going to say what of because what would be the point of reading the book.

I didn’t even feel annoyed by Mina insecurities like I usually do because of her mother. Mina never understood why when anything the least bit weird. During a field trip to Babushka (clue #2) Bakery Mina saves one of her classmates from falling to his death which starts her family curse. The Grimm curse: (she also learns for the first time that her name is Grimm not Grime) a family member must complete all 200 fairytales. If the person doesn’t succeed they die and the curse starts over from story one with a new family member.

I just had to finish this book. The concept had me hooked. I’m actually looking forward to the second book, Fairest. With all this said, time should have been spent editing and then editing some more. If you are a stickler for a well edited book, you will indeed be unenchanted. However, if you can over look Mina’s winey, annoying, insecure personality as well as the typos it’s an entertaining story.

Plot: 2*  Writing: 2  Character: 2  Other 3**  Overall Feel 3***

*There were some things left unexplained. Like the guy who helps Mina. It is never explained who he is and why he is there. The ending of the relationship between her and Brody (the classmate she saved) was unsatisfying.
**The retelling concept is good.
**I couldn’t put it down.

Fathomless Fairytale Retellings #3
by Jackson Pearce

Hardcover, 304 pages
Published September 4th 2012 by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
ISBN 0316207782 (ISBN13: 9780316207782)

Celia Reynolds is the youngest in a set of triplets and the one with the least valuable power. Anne can see the future, and Jane can see the present, but all Celia can see is the past. And the past seems so insignificant -- until Celia meets Lo.

Lo doesn't know who she is. Or who she was. Once a human, she is now almost entirely a creature of the sea -- a nymph, an ocean girl, a mermaid -- all terms too pretty for the soulless monster she knows she's becoming. Lo clings to shreds of her former self, fighting to remember her past, even as she's tempted to embrace her dark immortality.

When a handsome boy named Jude falls off a pier and into the ocean, Celia and Lo work together to rescue him from the waves. The two form a friendship, but soon they find themselves competing for Jude's affection. Lo wants more than that, though. According to the ocean girls, there's only one way for Lo to earn back her humanity. She must persuade a mortal to love her . . . and steal his soul.(less)

Wild Seed by Octavia E. Butler

Paperback, 320 pages
Published April 1st 2001 by Grand Central Publishing (first published 1980)
ISBN: 0446676977 (ISBN13: 9780446676977)
series: Patternmaster #1
Rating: 4 stars

From Goodreads:
Doro is an entity who changes bodies like clothes, killing his hosts by reflex or design. He fears no one until he meets Anyanwu. Anyanwu is a shapeshifter who can absorb bullets and heal with a kiss and savage anyone who threatens her. She fears no one until she meets Doro. Together they weave a pattern of destiny unimaginable to mortals.

My Review:
This was a depature from the books that I normally read. Simply put Doro is a killer. Sometimes he as a reson for killing some times he doesn't. Anyanwu is a healer. Doro somewhat a spirit. He jumps from body to body. Anyanwu is  a shapeshifter. Both can and have chosen to use both genders and different races. Doro is drawn to Anyanwu unlike any one before her and because of that she is able to protect her people (children, grandchildren, etc) from being killled by his hands. The story as well as the characters are interesting and different. The incest was a little distrubing for me. It is difficult to accurately describe this novel. Unexpectantly different. It draws you in as much as it repulses you.

Shoot the Breeze #3

Shoot The Breeze #3

I have been working 12+ hour days for weeks. I have been able to listen to audio books and read but I have been slacking on writing reviews. I'm up to about 24 reviews to write. That hasn't stopped me from adding to my TBR list. I just saw a book yet to be release that looks like a good read.

Reaper by Rachel Vincent

Reaper (Soul Screamers, #3.5)
Reaper
By Rachel Vincent
enovella pgs. 64
Series: Soul Screamers Book: 3.5
Rating: 3 (2.8)

From Goodreads:
Tod Hudson was a typical teenager. He liked girls, sports, food and tolerated his younger brother, Nash. In fact, he had his whole life in front of him--and due to his bean sidhe heritage, it was going to be a very long life indeed. And then the car accident occurred.
Suddenly Tod's future wasn't so sure, and he had to make a choice. Life... Death... or something Between....
An ebook exclusive Soul Screamers series novella.

My Review:
I had not heard of this series prior to downloading it from my local library. I was in the mood for a quick read and this fit the category. This book is not meant to be a stand alone obviously but I found that it could have been.  The novella is about how and why Tod became reaper. I can not go into any more details than that without giving something away since it is a short story. I going to go back to book one at some point for sure. TBR 2

A question to ask yourself when you read it:
Did Tod make the right choice?
I’m not sure that he did. It was out of grief and guilt. Plus I don’t think he wanted to be the one to face his mom and get blamed.
Beware: the word creep used alot!

Book Blogger Appreciation Week 2012 Day 2

In case you didn’t have a chance to sign up for an interview swap or your partner fell through, please feel free to answer these questions in place of an interview! So here we go

Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?
Usually I don't.

Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of
writing in books horrify you?
I do not make marks in books. Even when I was in school I wrote or type notes instead of highlighting!

How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ears? Laying the book flat open?
A book mark for sure and a index card/paper to make notes.

Fiction, Non-fiction, or both?
Fiction. Reading non-fiction makes me feel as if I'm taking a class.

Hard copy or audiobooks?
I like both. I prefer hard copy, then ebooks. I listen to audiobooks at work when I need a break from music.

Are you a person who tends to read to the end of chapters, or are you
able to put a book down at any point?
I able to put a book down at any point that is not juicy.

If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop to look it up right away?
Usually no but I do make a note of it and look it up later. Most of the time I can figure out what it means through the context of the surrounding sentences.

What are you currently reading?
Perfect Fit (ebook) and Death Benefits (audiobook)

What is the last book you bought?
Single Husbands

Are you the type of person that only reads one book at a time or can
you read more than one at a time?
I usually read at least two at a time.

Do you have a favorite time of day and/or place to read?
The afternoon and early evening.

Do you prefer series books or stand alone books?
Do we have a choice? It seems that most books coming out now are a part of a series.

Is there a specific book or author that you find yourself recommending over and over?
Not really but there are authors who have yet to let me down. Janet Evanovich's Plum series. James Patterson's Alex Cross series. J.A. Janice's Eve Dallas series. Nora Roberts. Honey B. Meeshia Mink. Carl Webber....

How do you organize your books? (By genre, title, author’s last name, etc.?)
By genre (with books by the same author stacked together of course) and then by read and not read.

Thanks for stopping by!
