The Touched by Jennifer Weiser
pages: 416
publisher: Limitless Publishing, LLC
source: Xpresso Book Tours
format: ePub
rating: 4 stars

Summary:
The first sixteen years of Arabella Penthallow’s life have been a lie…
In a world where deception is the key to survival, Ara has kept up the charade of being a perfect Legion Leader’s daughter. But a darkness stirs, and she discovers she is Touched, a mortal gifted by the Gods. The Touched are as rare as they are feared, and Ara is forced to leave Union City for neighboring Midnight City to protect herself and those she loves, leaving Tove Thorn, the boy who has always known her heart, behind.

Carter Decker has vowed to burn Union City to the ground…

Midnight City’s cocky, infamous bad boy always gets what he wants, and he wants Union City to pay for burning his mother alive because she was Touched. When Carter meets Ara, she is everything he’s been taught to hate. Then he learns she is Touched—just like him—he isn’t sure who he hates more…the Touched girl whose father killed his mother, or himself for being tempted by someone he’s sworn to kill.

They are told they’re fated to be soul mates…and they each wish the other never existed.

When Midnight City is attacked by Union City, Carter and Arabella will do the unthinkable…even if it means falling for the enemy. The truth lies in Arabella’s home nation, and Tove is waiting. Soul mates or not, he has an advantage Carter doesn’t, fated souls be damned.

War is coming…and Ara is the prize.

My Review:
This is a good book. It is told in varying povs. This is a read for those looking for a good dystopian. I love the characters. It is different, exciting, and just plain interesting. Imagine what it would be like to live with this desire for vengeance only to fall for someone you feel you ought to hate. Then imagine what it would be like to be a person having to hide what you know will get you killed.

This is a book for those who like the mix of paranormal vs normal people. Characters who have their own clear voice. You won't get lost as to which character is speaking. And of course for those who wanted a couple of swoon worthy characters.

About the Author:
Jennifer Weiser is a young adult author who has always been a book nerd and a bit chocolate obsessed. Writing has always been a favorite escape, but quickly became a passion not long after the birth of her daughter. When she isn’t combing the shelves of her local book stores or blogging about newest book obsessions, you can find her nestled in her nook creating worlds she hopes that one day will inspire her daughter, who not only has given her the courage to follow her dreams–but offers the inspirations that help color their worlds together.

The Only Boy by Jordan Locke

The Only Boy
@Bunnitaz
rating 3 (2.6)

From Goodreads:
Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out.

Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed.

Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him.

Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

My Review:
Alternating view points of Mary and Taylor, this is a story of their journey to understanding. Mary has grown up in Section One on the rule of the Matriarch. Everyone is force to live by these strict rules which includes not touching anyone, ever. All sections are supposed to abide by these rules but in Section Seven where Taylor is from they were more lenient with the rules.

Mary's mother broke the rules when they were in private. She always showed her daughter affection. Then one day she died. Mary becomes a rule breaker. She hates the rules and the Matriarch. In Taylor, she learns that what she was taught wasn't all together true. Together they find love and the possibility of a new beginning.

As a whole I like the story. It has a clear line of where it was going and how it was going to get there. With that being said, there were still unanswered questions. What is the disease? Why did it affect males rapidly? How exactly was it spread? Also the story is pretty much a narrative, the action is sporadic. It did lagged in spots and so I didn't finished as quickly as I could have.

Rants Disguised As Fiction

I came across this topic on Ensconced in YA. I understand what she means by actual rants disguised as fiction. You know, those books where the characters go on and on about a particular subject that you know that the author is trying to get something off his or her chest. With that said, I think that most dystopian novels are an author point of view of what will happen if a certain "something" gets out of hand. The author's warning of hey we better pay attention or this will happen. Let's look at some examples of what I mean.

The movie The Matix. The warning is our dependence on machines will be our downfall. Also the premise for I Robot, and the Terminator movies.

Matched Trilogy. The warning is creating a perfect society where everyone (well those the society leader see fit to include) is happy and taken care of create a society that has lost its freedom.

Jennifer Government (loved this book!). The warning is an all capitalist society will do anything for money and those without money might as well don't exist. A review on this book is coming soon so you can see just what I mean. Many people see the world in this book as far fetched. I see it as an all too real possibility, again see my review.

I love reading these types of books. Ensconced in YA is right though. It is a tedious read if the book just drones on and on in a non stop rant narrative sprouting out the authors propaganda. Hey, we are readers, we want to read your take on what would happen to the world but we bought a book of fiction not an essay so give us a story to follow along with.

The Initiate by Megg Jensen

The Initiate (Cloud Prophet Trilogy, #0.5)
#freestylefriday

From Kobobooks:

Before Anathema...

Before Sleepers...

There was The Initiate

Over a thousand years ago, the gods left Eloh's people and took their magic with them. To win back their favor, her people sacrifice ten female initiates every ten years. No has ever survived. There has never been a Chosen One.

Forced into becoming an initiate, Eloh will try to find a way to beat the odds, stay with her boyfriend, and survive the fires that threaten to consume her. But will her lack of faith in the gods and her disbelief in their magic doom her to a painful death?

The Initiate is a novelette that bridges the bestselling Cloud Prophet Trilogy (Anathema, Oubliette, and Severed) and The Swarm Trilogy (Sleepers, and two more novels coming in 2012).

The Song of Eloh Saga:

The Initiate, Book 1 - a novelette bridging the Cloud Prophet Trilogy and The Swarm Trilogy

Cloud Prophet Trilogy:
Anathema, Book 2
Oubliette, Book 3
Severed, Book 4

The Swarm Trilogy:
Sleepers, Book 5
Afterlife, Book 6
The Sundering, Book 7 (coming fall 2012)

My Review:
This book does what it is supposed to do. It got me interested in reading the two series or at least the first one in the Cloud Prophet Trilogy. Not having read any of the books I had to ask myself a couple of questions while reading this. Was Eloh beaten by her parents and why? Are the people of this world only desire two children? Is the only reason her parents did not want her is simply because she is another mouth to feed?

In this short story Eloh is being prepared to go to a sacrifice ceremony. Each town choose to girls in hopes that the gods will chose one thus they (the Gods) will return and bring back magic. Eloh has never believed in the gods so she knows that she is getting all dolled up to die by fire. But she is wrong. The gods do exist but has never chosen a girl because the ceremony is not right and the time is not right. Eloh is the chosen one. There is a catch however, she did not believe in the gods. So she will have all that she ever wanted but a a punishment she will not have the time to enjoy it.

If you are in a reading funk and need a quick read to jump start this definitely consider this. It will keep your attention until the end and short enough to read with a couple of hours or one day at the most.

Shoot the Breeze #3

Shoot The Breeze #3

I have been working 12+ hour days for weeks. I have been able to listen to audio books and read but I have been slacking on writing reviews. I'm up to about 24 reviews to write. That hasn't stopped me from adding to my TBR list. I just saw a book yet to be release that looks like a good read.

Reaper by Rachel Vincent

Reaper (Soul Screamers, #3.5)
Reaper
By Rachel Vincent
enovella pgs. 64
Series: Soul Screamers Book: 3.5
Rating: 3 (2.8)

From Goodreads:
Tod Hudson was a typical teenager. He liked girls, sports, food and tolerated his younger brother, Nash. In fact, he had his whole life in front of him--and due to his bean sidhe heritage, it was going to be a very long life indeed. And then the car accident occurred.
Suddenly Tod's future wasn't so sure, and he had to make a choice. Life... Death... or something Between....
An ebook exclusive Soul Screamers series novella.

My Review:
I had not heard of this series prior to downloading it from my local library. I was in the mood for a quick read and this fit the category. This book is not meant to be a stand alone obviously but I found that it could have been.  The novella is about how and why Tod became reaper. I can not go into any more details than that without giving something away since it is a short story. I going to go back to book one at some point for sure. TBR 2

A question to ask yourself when you read it:
Did Tod make the right choice?
I’m not sure that he did. It was out of grief and guilt. Plus I don’t think he wanted to be the one to face his mom and get blamed.
Beware: the word creep used alot!

Virals by Kathy Reichs

narrator: Cristin Milioti
  • Hardcover: 464 pages
  • Publisher: Razorbill; First Edition edition (November 2, 2010)
  • Language: English
  • ISBN-10: 1595143424
  • ISBN-13: 978-1595143426
  •  Rating: 3stars (3.6)

  • From Goodreads:
Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage "sci-philes" who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer's scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they're a pack. They are Virals.

    My Review:
Tory Brennan is the niece of Temperence Brennan of the Bones books and the TV show of the same name. Tory is a smart and headstrong 14 year old teenage girl. A different tone than many of the YA books out right now, Virals is not about a teenage romance (though she does have a crush). This book is about 4 smart kids who live on an secluded island near Charleston, SC. Together they try to solve the mystery of a dog tag. Finding the dog tag leads to a 40 plus year old cold case that someone will kill to keep the truth buried. Finding the dog tag also leads to find a sick puppy (Copper) who has been illegally experimented on. While resucing and caring for the ill puppy the group contracts a new hybrid parvovirus. Between trying to solve the cold case and their new DNA mutalition their lives will never be the same.

Can you tell I really liked this book. It is written in the first person, very conversational. I liked that this was not a teen romance. Romance is great but it's nice to take a break from it. My favorite character is Tory's friend, Hiram. His character actually had me laughing out loud several times. Read this if you love a good mystery. If you like YA minus the romance. If you love Scooby-doo. LOL I mean "jinkies... they would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for those meddling kids."

    Plot: 4  Characters: 4  Writing: 3 Other: 3*  Overall Feel: 4**

*setting was average. narrator was average as far as differences in characters voices (definitely a good choice though).
** fast paced and interesting. I wanted to know what happened next. I will take a break but looking forward to getting to book 2.
