My Review
Good book. Good read. I wanted to read this book because the character has schizophrenia. I know a couple of people to have it so it was a personal topic for me. Also when done right, characters with mental illnesses can make for a very touching story. This is the case with The Other Place. 

Justin is such a likable character and although the subject matter is heavy it didn't weigh you down or depressed you. All you want to do is keep turning those pages. I didn't care for Justin's mom but the other supporting characters worked well. Heck even the mom work well since what's a story without at least one character you don't like. 

This is not a standalone book but you don't feel lost not reading book 1. I didn't and all still made sense to me. So my 2 cents is that you give it a go.

ELIZABETH RODERICK grew up as a barefoot ruffian on a fruit orchard near Yakima, in the eastern part of Washington State. After weathering the grunge revolution and devolution in Olympia, Washington, Portland, Oregon and Seattle, she recently moved to a small cluster of houses amidst the vineyards of California’s Central Coast.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, and worked for many years as a paralegal and translator. She is a musician and songwriter, and has played in many bands, rocking some instruments she doesn’t even know the real names for, but mostly guitar, bass and keyboards.

Elizabeth writes novels for young adults and adults; short stories; and memoir which is way more interesting than it should be. Her stories are about love, death, gang warfare, and madness; her characters tend to be of the type that society generally shuns: addicts, convicts, and the mentally ill. She believes if people get to know these characters in stories and in real life, they’ll find them more likeable than they originally thought.

She applies Hunter S. Thompson’s Gonzo method to fiction writing. It often gets a little heavier than what she had in mind, but she chalks it up to forced consciousness expansion.

My Review
I read this book out of order. I was thinking that maybe if I read it book 2 would make more of an impact on me. Unfortunately, that was not the case. I just don't get it. What does it have to do with the Wizard of Oz really? There were potential there. The abuse is crazy but overall the story just felt somehow disjointed. I just left in the air with this one. I wanted to like it. Remakes (even if it is used as loose inspiration) I tend to like. I think this is a love or leave it type of book. You just have to try it for yourself. Not the most helpful review I know but hey, it's all I got.

My Review
Fun read. It will remind you of The Devil Wear Prada. Harper is an average teenager. Her best friend is popular, an athlete, and more let's say...experienced. She dream is to be a writer. She decides to apply to an internship at a teen magazine based in New York City. She was rejected but to her surprise she gets a call saying pack your bags if you still want to do this. The catch is that it's not for the position she initially wanted, it's as a dating blogger. Oops. Guess she shouldn't have stole her friends experience as her own for her essay.

Once in New York Harper learns about herself and the business. Harper also fell into that out of sight out of mind trap as far as her friend is concerned. No worries though. This is a "chick flick" so happy ending people. The blog posts were funny and the characters were interesting.This is a great beach read, travel read, get out of a reading slump read.

My Review
The was a steady paced book. I was surprised I liked it. It wasn't something that I had to read in one sitting but it was interesting. I kept coming back to it, wanting to know what happened next. I liked Chase for the most part. He did extraordinary things but never really thought about it. It was just something he did. He was attention seeking. You do want to smack him around at this lack of understanding the motivations behind other people action especially when it is so obvious but then you remember he's a teenage guy (sorry fellas) and you let it slide.

The way Chase is with his father makes him a sympathetic character. His personality adds to his appeal. You can tell that the author is a football fan. He may have even played or wanted to play high school football as those scenes are waaayyy to detail. I kinda got a Al Bundy feeling. If you don't get that reference youngster I suggest you find Married with Children and have yourself a little marathon. Anyway, good read for YA fan about an unlikely superhero whose "power" isn't all it cracks up to be.
