Night Work by Nelson George

Night Work
by Nelson George

rating 3 stars

Overview:Dark-skinned chocolate, sexy and smooth, Night earns his keep by pleasuring rich white women around New York City. But he's grown weary of this seedy, criminal life. If he could just get someone to sign him to a record deal, he'd willingly say good-bye forever to the emotionless sex that is slowly numbing his soul. Just when his dream of becoming an R&B vocalist is about to be realized, Beth Ann, a beautiful supermodel deep in debt to a dangerous drug ring, begs Night to help her move a large quantity of Ecstasy. He reluctantly agrees, but the good deed sinks him deeper into the nightlife he's been trying so desperately to escape. It also puts him on the radar of the NYPD, and when one of Night's clients is found murdered the cops are quick to add it all up against him. Now Night must fight the fallout of his past and try to forge a path back to his future, before it takes off without him.

My Opinion:

reading time: 17 days
It took a while to get through this book. It did not grab me. The pace of the book was a bit slow. The main character Night annoyed me in a way that I can't be my finger on. Perhaps the book pace and lack of excitement is due to the fact that the character was missing that in his life, since he had no real passion in his day to day life. The end of the book was it's saving grace. I look up how this book was rated on other sites and I must agree the masses. I did not dislike the book but it wont go down as a favorite either. In other words, it's a very middle of the road read.

*daring quote- page 111 when describing how blessed he felt character states " I fe lt like my back was being touched by the right hand of God and His left was massaging my dick" What can I say, that is bold!

**typo alert: page 143 7th line...see it?

Spoiler!!!Night dream is to be a famous R&B singer. But until that happens, he makes his living as a is a gigolo who serves mostly rich white women. He grew up with low self-esteem mostly due to the fact that people including his father put him down for being so dark.
When he was a child, he and his sister watched their mother die from a stroke. As a result he holds resentment towards his father for not being there when it happen and he thinks his father holds the same resentment towards him for not calling an ambulance. Now the only love they share is for Nikki Night's sister. Nikki had a tumor as a child and though they were finally able to remove it, she still suffers from aweful headaches and surgeries.
They story really gets good when he hooks up with DJ Power to drop his vocals on a rap track. Dj Power shows interest in wanting to sighn him. The track is quickly a hit. Comes in to the picture is Ivy Greenwich big time manager interested in Night as well. Along with Ivy is Beth Ann the Sports Illustrated model he fantasized about. She gave him the cold shoulder.
Night relucantly takes a job. He gets there to find and older white couple, the Perls, and a black female escort in a Billy Holiday mask. With the Miles Davis mask on he went to work on Mrs. Perl. After a few minutes he feels finger probing a place that's off limits for him and he flips on Mr. Perl. Night leaves the party.
At a video shoot Night spots a story about Mrs. Perl being found murder. Panick hits him knowing that could easily get caught up. After the shoot he goes to his female pimp Raffaella's apartment only to get cuffed by the detectives waiting for him to show up. He spends the night in jail but let go the next day.
All the while Night has been helping Beth Ann through one of his friends sell a large quantity of E pills. She gotten herself way over her head they are holding one of her friends until they get the money.
In the end Night finds out that the Mr. Perl he met was not the real Mr. Perl but a neighbor. He killed Mrs. Perl because she wanted him to get a divorce like she was going to do so that they could be together. With the help of another one of Night's friends the men who had kidnapped her friend were arrestted in a sting. Night makes a mind with his father. And the story ends with Night in the hospital awaiting news about whether or not Nikki will survive her latest medical crisis.

WRI Fright Fest 2015 Interviews: Author John Everson

@johneverson #wrifrightfest #cafechat #authorinterview

Today on Cafe Chat we are welcoming John Everson. Thank you for being here John. Let's get right into it.

Bunnita: Most people have a time of the day when they feel most productive. When do you find yourself writing most?

John: Given the way you phrased it, that’s actually a much more difficult question than you might think! I have a pretty demanding day job, so, while I probably feel most productive in the mid-late afternoon… that’s usually not when I get to write! I am a night owl, so you’d think I would write a lot at night, but really, if I don’t start working by 6 or 7 p.m., it’s not worth it for me to open a manuscript. I stay up late, but my productivity wanes as the hours grow later. So when I’m actively trying to finish a novel, I will frequently stake out a “writing night” where instead of going home after work, I go from work to my favorite pub and hole up in a corner, eat some finger food, have a couple beers and write for 4 hours or so. That gets me rolling before I start zoning! I have also gone through months where I force myself to get up 90 minutes early, and write before going to work. Not my favorite way to work, AT ALL, but I have gotten a lot done that way, since the house is quiet, and I have a looming time limit (leaving for work).  But my favorite and most enjoyable times to write are when I’ve got a day off for vacation or on the weekend, and I actually have the time to sit on the patio for several hours in the late morning / afternoon and create… with no hard deadlines! That’s how I started out as a writer when I was (a lot) younger – sitting out on the patio on the weekends for hours on end working on odd little stories. Damn I wish I had that kind of time today!

Bunnita: What drew you to the horror genre?

John: Oddly enough, science fiction! Growing up, I was a huge fan of golden age science fiction… but writers like Richard Matheson tended to fuse science fiction themes with horrific, macabre endings. His “Born of Man and Woman,” a very short story about an alien offspring determined to break free of its imprisonment, had a huge impact on me. It was sci-fi (alien) but yet had a horror twist at the end. Same goes for his Incredible Shrinking Man. Those kinds of stories really drew me, and when you coupled those with what I loved to watch on TV (Twilight Zone, Night Gallery, Outer Limits) you can see how I was drawn to “weird” stories that ended … badly! When I began to write stories myself, they frequently had vaguely science fiction themes, but always had a horrific twist. Eventually, I stopped trying to drag in the sci-fi, because the stories I thought up just didn’t call for futuristic trappings.

Bunnita: What kind of research do you?

John: Not a lot, because most of my stories aren’t based on anything “real” that I need to bone up on. When I set a story in a particular “place,” I do make sure that the place supports the story — for Siren and The Pumpkin Man, I’ve actually visited and taken pictures of the northern California coastal towns that the stories are set in… although, I ended up changing the names of the towns to protect the innocent! But those stories are based on real places. For demon and siren mythology, I did do some research, just to understand what the mythology has said about those beings… but there are so many variations, you really can follow some of a “path” and then invent your own alternate rules.

Bunnita: Is there anything you would say is hard about writing horror?

John: Horror has a couple roads. You can focus on building a mood of dread and anxiety… or you can focus on grossing out the reader with truly horrible things. I think the best horror has a little of both – and that’s a difficult line to walk!

Bunnita: What do you hope a person experience while reading your books?

John: I hope sometimes their skin prickles a bit, as something gets under it. I hope that they giggle a little when some of my characters get sarcastic. And I hope they hurry to turn the page and put off going to bed because they have to know what happens next. That’s the best experience as a reader… and it’s what every writer hopes to inspire.

Bunnita: Do you have a favorite horror movie?

John: Lots! It’s hard to narrow it to just one. I love Alien because it’s the perfect creepy merger between science fiction and horror. I love European horror from the ‘70s and ‘80s – Dario Argento’s Phenomena and Suspiria, Fulci’s The Beyond, Jean Rollin’s Living Dead Girl and Fascination,  Renato Polselli’s Delirium and Reincarnation of Isabel, Jose Ramon Larraz’s Vampyres, Harry Kumel’s Daughters of Darkness… the list goes on.

Bunnita: Do you have a favorite horror author?

John: Edward Lee is probably my favorite modern writer. Nobody else locks me to the chair like his books do. In the past 10 years, he is the only author who has had a book that really kept me turning the pages from start to finish all in one sitting because I just couldn’t put it down.

Bunnita: Do you go all out with Halloween?

John: Ironically… no. It’s my favorite holiday, but I don’t dress up, and don’t decorate the yard like a cemetery – though I love it when other people do! For most of the past 15 years I’ve hosted Halloween movie nights for a small group of friends, and played a variety of new and old horror movies for the group to enjoy, but outside of that, I’m fairly low key. I’m a horror spectator.

Bunnita: Do you have a favorite holiday and why is it your favorite?

John: Halloween is my favorite, because suddenly horror is everywhere! Nothing makes me more excited than the Gothic trappings of a haunted house. Now if I could just find the time to go visit some haunted houses at Halloween…

Bunnita: What is your favorite horror book?

John: I couldn’t possibly pick one. Stephen King’s Night Shift or Pet Sematary or Clive Barker’s The Damnation Game or Books of Blood or Edward Lee’s Succubi or Incubi or Coven… or Anne Rice’s The Vampire Lestat or The Witching Hour… or how about the one I read a couple times as a teen – Bram Stoker’s Dracula. They’ve all grabbed me in different, important ways.

Bunnita: Which book that you have written is your favorite and why?

John: Nope… still can’t do it. I guess I just don’t usually hone in on “a single thing” in my life! I love aspects of all of my books, and I can’t really put one above the other! I love Covenant because it was my first novel, but I love its sequel Sacrifice because I think it’s a better, more action-packed book with some of the same characters. I love The 13th because I think at that point, I really knew better what I was doing and had a blast creating its crazy blood-spattered orgy … and I love Siren because it’s a little more of a serious reflection on obsession and who, really, is a villain. And I love NightWhere because it’s the bravest, most over-the-top erotic horror story I’ve ever come up with. And then there are The Pumpkin Man, Violet Eyes and Family Tree… All of them have high points for me…

Bunnita: Do you have any advice for the aspiring writers out there?

John: Write what you want to read. If other people respond well… awesome. If they don’t? You still pleased yourself. And that’s all you really can ever count on. Entertain yourself, and others will follow.

Bunnita: Any advice specific to the horror genre?

John: We will always be afraid, because we’re human. It’s part of our genetic makeup. Taking that fear and using the adrenaline it releases to create the literary equivalent of a thrill ride is a tightrope feat… but if you can find the right balance and not fall off the wire, you’ll hit a universal nerve that can move everyone who reads your work. And that’s an amazing, powerful thing.

Bunnita: Your most recent novel was The Family Tree last fall… do you have any novels coming out this year?

John: I’m actually working on my ninth novel, which I’d planned to have finished by the summer, but… real life got in the way. That book is a long-overdue sequel to Covenant and Sacrifice, which at the moment is tentatively titled Redemption. I’m looking forward to finally being able to tie that up and write THE END.

In the meantime, I’m pretty excited about this year’s release – Sacrificing Virgins will be out from Samhain Publishing in December. This is a collection of my best short stories from the past decade, plus a couple new pieces. It will be the largest of my four fiction collections, with 25 stories, and includes a wide sampling of my work – from quiet ghost stories to over-the-top horror. There are even a couple tie-in stories that relate to my novels The Pumpkin Man, Siren and NightWhere. I hope readers will enjoy these tales!

Bunnita: Do you have any last words?

John: R.I.P.

Well there you have it. I'll like to thank John for this interview. And once again, thank y'all for stopping by until next time Happy Reading!

Excerpt:
Sensory detail came to me in little pieces. The strips of weak sunshine through the blinds on the window. The rich cotton of the pillow and sheets that touched my skin. The firm mattress.
The warm hand resting on my naked hip.
I froze, cracked one eye open. This wasn’t my bedroom. I wasn’t in my apartment. Where the hell was I? I ordered my brain to think faster, but it was like trying to navigate a boat through a thick fog.
Snippets of memories from last night finally seeped through the swiss cheese holes in my brain. Tino’s bar. Kyle showing up with friends. His mouth on mine in the bathroom stall. Coming back to his place to talk. And then…
Oh, God. My face erupted in a burst of flames that spread down my throat, across my chest. Had I really had sex with him? I was lying naked in not-my-bed, with not-my-hand touching me. My pelvis and thighs had a slight tenderness that wasn’t unpleasant. All signs pointed to yes.
Conflicting emotions battered at me. Part of me wanted to run away, pretend like this had never occurred. After all, what was gonna happen between him and me now? Would he wake up, look at me and be horrified about last night? Regretful? Rude and dismissive?
The other part of me couldn’t stop focusing on the gentle pressure of his fingers cupped around my hip. How his hand flexed in his sleep so he gave me little unconscious squeezes. The soft cadence of his breath stirring the back of my hair.
My chest tightened, and I sucked in a breath. I’d had sex with Kyle. And now that the pieces were filling in, I remembered that it had been amazing. The best I’d ever had, hands
down. Unbelievably hot and intimate too. There had been moments of genuine connection between us last night. Not just physical lust. And maybe that was the thing that was tripping me up the most right now. Because I’d felt something for him.
I bit my lower lip. How could I have experienced an emotional link with someone who wasn’t my type? A guy who tended to aggravate me more often than not? And to add to the issue, I was freshly single. Twenty-four hours after dumping West, I’d been all too willing to hop into the sack with Kyle.
Or the couch, to be technical.
What kind of a girl did that? This kind, apparently. Bianca would approve of my sexual revolution. Hell, she’d probably give me a box of condoms and tell me to keep up the good work.
I lay there for another moment, coming up with scenarios that wouldn’t end this event in total awkward disaster. Finally, I rolled onto my back. His hand slid possessively across my belly and cuddled me closer.
I swallowed as my heart squeezed. It was so dumb, the momentary flare of wanting this to be real. Never gonna happen.

Welcome to the tour stop of for Ditch Flowers by Amanda Linsmeier, a women's fiction novel.  The tour runs from November 2 - 6 and will consist of reviews, guest posts, interviews and excerpts.  The full schedule can be seen here.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Trouble comes in threes, Grandma CeCe always said…

A baby. Just holding one sets Julia’s heart thumping. She’s wanted a child for so long. When she finally gets pregnant, she’s bursting to tell the world….until a checkup from the doctor confirms a miscarriage.

Julia’s world feels like it’s dissolving. This second tragedy following her father-in-law’s death, shakes her and her husband Greg. To support his mother, they uproot their lives and move to Greg’s childhood home. Under the bright Midwestern sky, Julia can feel a new world and new hope beginning. But trouble comes in threes, and soon a boy shows up at Julia’s new daycare whose blue eyes and freckled face look eerily like Greg’s. Despite her love for her husband, Julia finds her thoughts haunted by the boy’s face, and she can’t shake the feeling that her husband has a secret.

My Review

This is a touching read. I you are the type to cry this will pull some tears from you thank goodness you'll also have some laughs. It not a fast read but it doesn't drag either. You get caught up in Julia life. In her sorrow and pain. A miscarriage is a terrible thing to think. The author was able to write a believe character who is going through some of the most difficult times in her life but able to find strength.

I'm pretty sure I haven't stated this on the blog before, I experienced a miscarriage. It was and still is the worse thing that has ever happened to me. It is something that I don't think you can ever forget. You have to deal with how to live with the 'what could have been' moments. So this read really spoke to me in a real way. I think this is a read anyone will enjoy.

EXCERPT

I sift through bubble wrap and tissue paper. I pull out a wooden box the color of chestnuts, two silver pocket watches, and a small painting of flowers and stones.
“Your dad’s?” I say.
Greg nods. “My mom asked if she could send these things. Nothing particularly sentimental, but I thought you’d like to do something with them for the house.”
“So thoughtful,” I say. “And I would love to have your dad’s things here.” There’s also a box within, marked Fragile in curvy handwriting. I open it and pull off more layers of bubble wrap. Inside is a bottle of cranberry wine, made by Greg’s father.
I hold the smooth, clear glass bottle filled with pale, rosy liquid. I touch the edge of the clean, modern label which Dale had designed a few years ago. The logo is a circle of twisted grape vines and leaves surrounding the name of the wine beneath the words Twisted Circle.
Greg’s eyes are sad as he touches one of the watches. He returned home from the funeral with some photos, an old signed football from the Green Bay Packers, Dale’s wedding band, and a few other items. They sit atop his dresser now. He hasn’t wanted to put them anywhere else.
“Hey,” I say. “Should we cancel date night and stay in?”
“We don’t have to.”
“No, let’s. We can order pizza, watch bad TV.” I perform a suggestive little shimmy.              “Have some sex.”
I finally get a smile out of him.
“Maybe try to make a baby.”
“That sounds like a good night to me.” He tugs me close again, kisses me deep.
“Right now?” I ask with a giggle.

He’s not laughing. He kisses me with a kind of built-up fervor. He reaches down to me, and I gasp. I pull him close as we recline on the couch and can’t help but feel a little thrill. I’ve been off birth control for a month, since right after our wedding. I remember how we discussed starting a family while curled up in bed by the light of the night. We spoke in eager, hushed tones as we planned our future and decided to take the leap into parenthood, in a way that felt both amazingly responsible and yet childishly exciting. The truth is I can’t wait. I wonder if tonight will be the night.

In fact, she hadn’t been happy in a long time, and the further she gets away from her marriage, the more she realizes how oppressed she’d felt in the housewife role she’d slipped into over the years.

Throw in Ellie’s melodramatic, hypochondriac, alcoholic mother, revelations about her dead father’s lascivious past, a comedy club faux pas, a yoga date gone wrong, the incident where “The Other Woman Almost Killed My Son with Tiny Shrimp,” a very scary divorce attorney, and—well, and you have one messed-up former housewife.

And then there’s Doug.

Doug is her ex-boyfriend—the man she dated before Stan “Whore-man” Johnson. Doug is a cop these days, older, but with the same muscles and chocolate-brown eyes she remembers from their college days. He’s also made it abundantly clear he’d like to take up with Ellie where they left off more than fifteen years ago.

Ellie, however, is trying to go from married to unmarried, and her journey is messy, chaotic, and fraught with ice cream and booze. A lot of booze. Thank goodness for her best friend, Cindy, who stands by Ellie through thick, thin, and many cartons of Rocky Road ice cream.

Sometimes life just falls apart. And sometimes life is sex, Doug, and a rocky road.
Monique, Bria, and Samariah are best friends from Milwaukee, going through some of everything together. They are the “it” girls in school, the ones other girls want to be like.

Samariah, however, doesn’t want to share her shine with anyone; she’ll do anything to get what she wants, even if that means sabotaging her best friends’ relationships.

Bria speaks her mind and is as real as they come. She has been with David since freshman year of high school and they are madly in love. Will that change when a baby is introduced into the picture?

Monique is too naive; she tries to see the best in everybody. She finally gets the man of her dreams; only to find out he has been harboring a secret. Will the love she has for him keep them together?

Will this friendship stand the test of time or will lies, betrayal, heartache, and secrets tear them apart?

Publisher: SBR Publications; 1 edition (November 19, 2013)
Rating: 4 stars

Summary:
He’s beautiful with gray eyes, tall, chocolate… and he’s worth fighting for.

Meet Omari a gorgeous, hard working, twenty-eight year old man from the Southside of Chicago. No matter how hard he works at his job at UPS, it is never enough to take care of himself and his long-term girlfriend. After continuous pressure from his older cousin, Ching, Omari finally traded in busting his ass for working under Ching hustling three major blocks on the Westside. All is good as Omari juggles work and the drug game. That is, until Ching involves him in the murder of, who ends up being, the Governor’s nephew. As he dodges homicide detectives, Omari is also trying to dodge getting caught between two loves. He’s been committed to Aeysha for seven years, but is falling each day for Simone, an older more established woman who is at his every beck and call. After years of playing the side chick, Simone finally finds love that she thinks is all her own. Just as she settles into loving Omari, she finds out about Aeysha and her desperate mind begins to plot on how to finally win her man. Simone’s best friend, Tammy, thinks Simone is crazy as she herself is running from an obsessed ex-boyfriend who is persistent in trying to kill her. Tammy lives in hiding for months as she asks herself this burning question; how can a man love a woman with the same hands that he is willing to kill her with?

As the murder investigation leads to arrests, the walls come down on these lovers. Murder, sex, and indictments lead to unforeseen tragedy and unexpected love.

My Review:
Okay so let's get into this. Omari is good looking. He's so good looking that his family calls him pretty boy. Not liking the name he tried to make himself look more "hard". His looks is definitely why he pulls so many women. He has one night stands and then he has his dips (women he see on a more regular basis).

Ayesha has been with Omari for years. She loves him though she knows he cheats. She is also insecure. Her insecurity becomes worse when she loses her job and finds out that she has fertility problems.

Tammy has broken up with her boyfriend. Tired of him not being able to take care of her she thinks it's the best thing to do. He had been physically abusive during the relationship and now that she left he is homicidal. After suffering a grazing shot to the head, Tammy now lives in fear.

Ching is a drug dealer and Omari cousin. Being older Omari looks up to Ching as more of an uncle than a cousin. Not being able to carry the load of bills he often borrows money from Ching. Omari soon begins to work for Ching not realize that he is putting in work and has become deep into the game. After get picked up by the cops Ching and Omari relationship is not the same.

Simone looks like she has it together on the outside. Educated and employed she is a success story. Well, she would be if it wasn't for the fact that she is insecure. She sees the accomplishment that she has made and even brags about them but she still envies other women. Simone doesn't realize that she is what she is because she allows it.

So there you have it. A quick breakdown of the characters. As for the story, it is a urban hood drama. Omari claims to love and respect Ayesha his long time love while disrespecting her with his infidelities. I mean really, how can you love someone and knowingly do them dirty. Love isn't just what you do for me it is also what you want do to me.

Ayesha is like many women from around-the-way. She got herself a decent job. She has a man that many women would love to have. Deep down she is insecure because she isn't who she thinks she can be. Losing her job makes her feel useless and her fertility issues make her feel worthless. When things start looking up for her so does her self-esteem. She never got the chance to understand that going back to school to get the education she lacked would have helped her insecurity problem.

Simone is batshit crazy and hella thirsty. She has never had a boyfriend of her own. She is an example of a 80/20 woman. A man cheats with her because she is what the girlfriends/wives are not when in reality she one dimensional. All along her woman was the 80 and you went jeopardized that for a 20. Simone has it going on on paper. Beautiful, sexy, educated and mad sex skills. However, she is emotionally desperate. She hides it well until eventually the man has enough of her and ends things. That when the cray-cray comes out. The lesson Simone hasn't learned is that if he knows that you are okay with being second string you'll never be varsity in his mind.

Secret of a Side Bitch is full of drama. It has sex. It has crazy stalkers. And it has murder. This is book 1 so it ends with a cliffhanger.

Should you read it? Yes. Who should read it? Fan of street/urban lit. You know, those of you who like Love and Hip Hop.
