The Rock Star’s Secret Baby
Blair Babylon
Publication date: June 28th 2016
Genres: Adult, Romance
The first time that Dr. Andy Kumar had seen Cadell Glynn—all six feet, four inches of him, tribal tattoos winding around his arms, fingertips deeply callused from years of pressing steel guitar strings, dressed in leather pants and a tee shirt ripped at the neck that let the tattoos on his muscular shoulders peek through, blue-tipped black hair spiraling in curls and swaying near his shoulders, and fear and helplessness filling his dark eyes at the sight of his sick child hooked up to two different IVs and crying—Andy had known that he was going to be trouble.
Mr. Glynn had interrogated Andy and the other surgeons, asking why, and when, and how, and would it hurt Emily too much.
He had calmed down some after that first week. Some.
After a few weeks, when Emily had stabilized, Mr. Glynn had backed off from the third degree, but he had begun to mention that there were other things in life outside the hospital. Restaurants. Dancing. Concerts. For months.
She should not date him for so many reasons. So many.
Andy wished that the hot rock star daddy would quit asking her out.

She struggles to feel human.

In 2256, the only remnants of civilization on Earth’s first colonized planet, Kepler, are the plant-covered buildings and the nocturnal, genetically spliced bug-people nesting within them: the Cull. During the day, Syl leaves her home in the sewers beneath Elite City to scavenge for food, but at night the Cull come looking for a meal of their own. Syl thought gene splicing died with the Android War a century ago. She thought the bugs could be exterminated, Elite city rebuilt, and the population replenished. She’s wrong.

Whoever engineered the Cull isn’t done playing God. Syl is abducted and tortured in horrific experiments which result in her own DNA being spliced, slowly turning her into one of the bugs. Now she must find a cure and stop the person responsible before every remaining man, woman, and child on Kepler is transformed into the abomination they fear.

He struggles not to.

For Bastion, being an android in the sex industry isn’t so bad. Clubbing beneath the streets of New Elite by day and seducing the rich by night isn’t an altogether undesirable occupation. But every day a new android cadaver appears in the slum gutters, and each caved in metal skull and heap of mangled wires whittles away at him.

Glitches—androids with empathy—are being murdered, their models discontinued and strung up as a warning. Show emotion, you die. Good thing Bastion can keep a secret, or he would be the next body lining the street.

He can almost live with hiding his emotions. That is, until a girl shows up in the slums—a human girl, who claims she was an experiment. And in New Elite, being a human is even worse than being a Glitch. Now Bastion must help the girl escape before he becomes victim to his too-human emotions, one way or another.

My Review
The pace of this book varied. It started off a bit slow then it sped up then slow back down. I didn't really connect with any of the characters but the storyline kept me reading. If you like plots like the Terimantor, you know the whole AI turning on us thing, then this may be right up your alley. In this story you get a human character who's taken hostage and experimented on and a defective (in the android opinion) android who decides to save her and perhaps the little bit of humanity left.

Like I said. I like the concept. There wasn't anything special about the character to sunk my teeth into. A read a dystopian/scifi/YA read may want to try.

About the Author
Jadah currently lives in Nashville, TN and works in law. When not babysitting attorneys, she can be found juicing her brain for creative ideas or fantasizing about her next trip out of the country (or about Tom Hiddleston as Loki – it’s always a toss up when she fantasizes).

She grew up in rural Arkansas, yet can still write good and sometimes even wears shoes! She did date her first cousin for a while but they decided against marriage for the sake of the gene pool.

Her true loves are elephants, cursing, and sangria – in that order. If you find an elephant that curses like a sailor whilst drinking sangria, you’re dangerously close to becoming her next romantic victim – er, partner.

She cut her writing teeth on badly written, hormone-driven fanfiction (be glad that’s out of her system), and her one true dream is to have wildly erotic fanfiction with dubious grammar written about her own novels. Please make her dreams come true.

Don’t call them heroes.

But these six California teens have powers that set them apart.

Take Ethan, a.k.a. Scam. He’s got a voice inside him that’ll say whatever you want to hear, whether it’s true or not. Which is handy, except when it isn’t—like when the voice starts gabbing in the middle of a bank robbery. The only people who can help are the other Zeroes, who aren’t exactly best friends these days.

Enter Nate, a.k.a. Bellwether, the group’s “glorious leader.” After Scam’s SOS, he pulls the scattered Zeroes back together. But when the rescue blows up in their faces, the Zeroes find themselves propelled into whirlwind encounters with ever more dangerous criminals. At the heart of the chaos they find Kelsie, who can take a crowd in the palm of her hand and tame it or let it loose as she pleases.

Filled with high-stakes action and drama, Zeroes unites three powerhouse authors for the opening installment of a thrilling new series.

My Review
This was an okay read. It's about 6 teens. They have "powers". Nate can see connections and control group emotions. Riley is blind but she can see through other people eyes. Chizara can feel technology her base power is to crash network systems (or anything electrical really) but she also has the potential to fix burnt out devices. Ethan has a voice that can get him whatever he wants. However, the voice can no conscience and has a tendency to make matters worse. Thibault can also see connections however, unlike Nate those connections are not strong. He is easily forgettable. Kelsey is also like Nate in that she can control the emotions of a crowd but her crowd control is as a group. She can intensify whatever they are feeling or pass on her emotions to the crowd.

Ethan was the central character is this book. Or should I say, his voice was. It started because he wanted a ride home but when the person he tried to get the ride from was bigger and scarier than he thought he made the mistake of letting the voice do the talking. From that point on things went down hill for him and the zeroes. Ethan's voice is a jerk but Ethan isn't that great of a guy either.

A lot of what happen could have been prevented had he not wanted to keep that duffle filled with money. Ethan looked up schizophrenia once and thought that applied to him. And I guess if you just go on the hearing voices part it fits. I think of it as more of a multiple personality. Whenever Ethan wants something that he cannot get himself the voice comes out.

Anyway, the only character that really had me was Thibault. How said is his story? Unable to make any connections. Constantly being forgotten. I'm glad that it seems that there are ways to remember him though none are long lasting but hopefully he'll get the connections he so desperately want. Aaaahhh, his story about how he ended up living on his home is nothing short of heartbreaking.

Thibault saved the story for me. There is a bit of a romance with Riley. A potential love triangle when you add in the fact that Nate is probably still in love with Riley. I don't know. The story didn't grab me like I wanted it to but it was too bad. In the end, the story was okay (the whole we have powers so we should learn how to control them) but don't be surprised if you don't connect with most or any of the characters.

Fresh on the heels of Michelle Payne’s historic Melbourne Cup win, comes a blockbuster Australian story about a Queensland girl and the ‘race that stops a nation’ . . .

Tully Athens has always dreamed of following in the footsteps of her hero Michelle Payne. Of living up to the Athens name and becoming the third generation of women from her family to rule the track. But Tully’s never been sure she’s got the nerve, and when her mother is killed in a racing accident, her whole world is shattered.

Six months later, in the heat of a Queensland summer, sixteen-year-old Tully is ready to face her fears. But getting back in the saddle leads to a whole lot more than she bargained for, with an out of control crush on the boy from their rival thoroughbred farm – the gorgeous but cocky larrikin Brandon Weston – and a forgotten filly with stardom in her eyes . . .

When faced with the most difficult decision of her life, will Tully choose to train and race her new filly in Melbourne? Or will she sacrifice it all to fight for love on the land that feeds her soul?

It’s only when tragedy rips everything from her that Tully finds a strength and courage she never knew she had, in this action-packed novel of passion, adventure and determination.

My Review
An okay read. Tully is a great character. Her mother died during a horse event. She was already struggling to live up to the great horse racing lineage of the female in her family. But after the incident with her mother she struggled even more with the fear. I pretty sure I can say without spoiling anything that her eventually getting over that fear makes her an even more likable character.

This was a slow read. If you are the type of reader who is quick to add a book to your dnf pile then this may not be the read for you. If you can get the the first, say, half of the book then the story pick up pace. Love YA horse centered story with a little romance thrown in? Give this a try.

Kiki Nichols might not survive music camp.

She’s put her TV-loving, nerdy self aside for one summer to prove she’s got what it takes: she can be cool enough to make friends, she can earn that music scholarship, and she can get into Krause University’s music program.

Except camp has rigid conduct rules—which means her thrilling late-night jam session with the hot drummer can’t happen again, even though they love all the same TV shows, and fifteen minutes making music with him meant more than every aria she’s ever sung.

But when someone starts snitching on rule breakers and getting them kicked out, music camp turns into survival of the fittest. If Kiki’s going to get that scholarship, her chance to make true friends—and her chance with the drummer guy—might cost her the future she wants more than anything.

My Review
Really liked this. I played the clarinet for a few years couple that with my mother musical taste and I never had a chance not to like classical music. Add classical music and reading and this book was already a winner. Julie Hammerle is a good story teller. I liked the way the story was told. I liked Kiki (and the name Kiki). I connected with her. And I was able to picture this read clearly.

It's a light coming-of-age YA done right. In a funk? Try this book.
