Interview: Aftermath by Tom Lewis

@XpressoReads #authorinterview #bookblitz

Tell us about your debut novel:
The book’s called “Aftermath”.  It’s a fast-paced, dystopian sci fi actioner that follows a teenage girl’s struggles for survival in the increasingly hostile wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings.  I’m calling it a “Hunger Games” with aliens.

“Aftermath” is the first novel in the “After the Fall” dystopian series, which will follow my heroine, Paige, and the remnants of humanity in their efforts to both survive, and reclaim our world.

How did you get into writing?
I started writing screenplays in 1999, and had my first screenplay optioned that year.  I followed that up with several other screenplays, a few of which were optioned by production companies and ended up getting me hired for writing assignments.  Two of those scripts were made into movies which I produced and directed.  The first of those movies was picked up by Lionsgate for distribution, and we’re in negotiations with distributors on the second film, a spooky ghost story called “The Chanel”.  It’s about a teenage girl, who after surviving a near-death experience in a car crash, finds herself haunted by a shadowy figure she sees from the corner of her eye – something that followed her back from the other side of death.

You’re also an attorney?
Yes.  I practice entertainment law from my office in Santa Monica.  My clients are mainly producers, so that’s helped with getting my screenplays out there.  Before that, I served in the Marines.

Where did your interest in post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction come from?
My first exposure to the dystopian genre came about 4 years ago, when I was negotiating movie rights to a best-selling novel for one of my clients.  I read that novel, and then read the “Hunger Games” trilogy, and then I was hooked.  Dystopian, YA, NA, sci fi action, survival, and post-apocalyptic stories are far and away my favorites.

Where did the inspiration for Aftermath come from?
I came up with the idea for Aftermath about a year ago.  I was searching Amazon for something post-apocalyptic and dystopian, but with ordinary people thrown into that upside-down world. Most of the books I was finding had either elite commandos, or the threat wasn’t big enough, or there just wasn’t enough action, thrills, or scares.  So basically I wrote Aftermath as the story I wanted to read.  I originally started drafting it as a screenplay, but then I saw the potential of it as a series of novels.  The story is epic in scope – it follows the survivors through the end of civilization, and its conquest by this alien race.  And by doing it through novels, I wasn’t limited to budget considerations you have when writing screenplays.  But I did have the fun of shooting the trailer I made for the book.  You can see that trailer here:  https://vimeo.com/124008432

What's next for you?
I’m about halfway finished with the second installment in the series, and hope to publish it later this summer.  The working title is “The Whisperers.”

When he’s not writing, or handling the legal work for his clients’ films, Tom enjoys working out, hanging out at the beach, bike riding, reading, and movies.

After the Fall by Tom Lewis

Genres: Dystopia, Young Adult

Synopsis:
The end of the world came fast. Between the time the warning had sounded on the TV, till when 16-year-old Paige O’Connor awakened sometime later, civilization had been crushed.

The attacks had come by “them” – those things in the ships in the sky that had appeared suddenly, and without warning.

And as Paige would soon discover, the attacks had only been the beginning.

Aftermath is the first book in the new After the Fall dystopian action series, which follows a young girl’s struggle for survival in the wake of civilization’s collapse, and humanity’s domination by an alien race of beings.

Blog Tour: Encender by J. Kowallis

Encender
J. Kowallis
(The Enertia Trials #2)
Publication date: February 29th 2016
Genres: Dystopian, New Adult
They say you feel cold when you die.
The people I’ve killed would beg to differ.
For twenty-something Ransley, the adopted daughter of famed street fighter Estevan Benitez, fighting is all she knows. One hidden detail separates her from the endless string of her pathetic opponents: she can craft and influence heat and fire.
When she’s pitted against the strongest fighters at the infamous Argolla, Ransley faces something she never expected:
A man like her.
Roydon can duplicate himself. When the two collide in the ring, a chain of deals turns Roydon over to Public Four and he’s taken away to undergo the disturbing process of the Nexis. What it is, or what it does, no one outside of The Public knows.
Driven by guilt and a desire to release the only person she’s ever met who’s like her, Ransley isn’t about to leave him for dead—not when he might hold the answers to her missing past. Now she must trust a pair of strangers: a former military man out to collapse the system, and a woman whose premonitions could tear them all apart.

My Review:
This is the second book in the series. The second book in series can go either way even though many times it falls flat. Encender was able to avoid that by focusing the book on two other characters. Nate and Reggie are still part of the story but the main focus is Ransley and Royden. A little trick other author use. Put the characters in the same type of setting, have the previous main characters as background character in the new one, and voila and second in series with a new story to tell.

Once again I liked the story and characters. I loved that the action continued in this book as well. In this story, we find that there are other Publics and how they differ from each other. The characters still read like they are younger than they are supposed to be but they are developed a bit more. In fact, most aspects of the story were worked on for the better.

If you read the first one, then for sure go ahead and read this one. If you are a fan of dystopian then this would probably be a good read for you. I don't think that you would be too lost if you read the book out of order.

Reggie’s dreams . . .
aren’t dreams.
Visions of the future flood her mind like shards of broken puzzles. Caged in her cell, every morning begins the same. She’s drugged, tortured, and images are torn from her memory by Public One.
Until the morning everything changes. The vision is different. The future’s never been about her, and now she knows they’re coming for her:
Nomads.
How will she convince them to keep her alive when Nate, their leader, doesn’t like or even trust her? To him, she’s a science experiment. A machine.
When Public One will do anything to keep her, Reggie must make a decision: remain a slave to her past, or risk her future to venture into a world more terrifying than she’s ever known.
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / The Book Depository

My Review:
This is the first book in the series. Y'all know by now that I love dystopian novel so this one caught my eye. In what used to be the U.S. there are two ways of life, living within Public One or living as Normads. Normads lives are dangerous as they are always on the move trying to keep from getting caught by Public One. Public One has a new way of tracking and her name is Reggie. Reggie is able to see things and Public One is unable to read/see those thoughts.

I felt for Reggie. They used her as a science experiment but worse they treated her as one. She has spent every day of her time in Public One in pain under brutal treatment. Nate is a Normad who is constantly in  a funk because he remembers what things used to be like. When a stranger comes and tell them about Public One and there way the have of finding people, Nate calls foul but ultimately leads up a team to help save the stranger's family and find if there is any truth to this so called human seer.

This was an interesting story. There is plenty of action. The characters were okay. Reggie in particular won me over. Nate was a little annoying but then again, he was written to be that way. You can get wrapped up in this book which is a good thing but there are some things that will make you do a double take. I'm not going to say what those things are because if you decide to read this maybe if you get wrapped up in the story maybe you won't even notice what I noticed, and wouldn't that be great. I say if you like dystopian novels give this one a shot.
Rating: 3 stars

Author Bio:
J. Kowallis, the only girl of four children, grew up in northern Utah with a head full of wild stories (most often unreal). At the age of 9, she wrote her first poem, a dedication to E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. It was so intriguing, her third grade teacher requested to keep the original. Between living in various fictional worlds, and spending time on her studies, she managed to graduate from Weber State University’s creative writing program. She now lives in Utah with her Mini Schnauzer, Etta, and spends most of her time still bouncing between this world and the fantastical while enjoying delectable über-dark chocolate and lavender baths. She enjoys dreaming about, flying to, and writing about distant lands (real or unreal).

Blog Tour: Perfected by Kate Jarvik Birch

Perfected
Release Date: 07/01/14
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
Perfection comes at a price.

As soon as the government passed legislation allowing humans to be genetically engineered and sold as pets, the rich and powerful rushed to own beautiful girls like Ella. Trained from birth to be graceful, demure, and above all, perfect, these “family companions” enter their masters’ homes prepared to live a life of idle luxury.

Ella is happy with her new role as playmate for a congressman’s bubbly young daughter, but she doesn’t expect Penn, the congressman’s handsome and rebellious son. He’s the only person who sees beyond the perfect exterior to the girl within. Falling for him goes against every rule she knows…and the freedom she finds with him is intoxicating.

But when Ella is kidnapped and thrust into the dark underworld lurking beneath her pampered life, she’s faced with an unthinkable choice. Because the only thing more dangerous than staying with Penn’s family is leaving…and if she’s unsuccessful, she’ll face a fate far worse than death.

For fans of Keira Cass’s Selection series and Lauren DeStefano’s Chemical Garden series, Perfected is a chilling look at what it means to be human, and a stunning celebration of the power of love to set us free, wrapped in a glamorous—and dangerous—bow.

My Review:
Disturbing. This isn't a horror story in the traditional sense. There aren't any monsters or serial killers. This is a dystopian novel in the typical way. There aren't any plagues or overthrown governments. That is why this story was disturbing. Disturbing but good.

Humans are being genetically engineered aka cloned to be pets. They (the human pets) are raised in kennels. They are trained on how to be the best pet possible. And if they are ever returned that are put down. Yes, these human pets are treated like dogs. Ella is from a kennel that is similar to a place where you would get pure breeds.

I like the idea of this story. Tackling whether or not a person made in a lab should be consider a human or something human-like. If Perfected, the answer is human-like. I like that the author made a quick but important reference to slavery. It's one of the first things that jumped into my head as I began to read. It is clear that we are supposed to look at Ella as a pet and not a slave. Since she doesn't actually do any labor a pet is how I saw her.

Ella, what can I say. She's not the sharpest tack in the toolbox. The thing that annoyed me about her is that she just didn't get outraged. She didn't have enough "this shit isn't right" moments for me. She did question what was going on but it wasn't that revolution spark in her. I think that maybe, hopefully, there will be a book two. I think maybe there will be. In book two, I'm pretty sure she'll be a bit stronger, more vocal, and more free-my-people-ish. o_O

Should you read it? Yes. Who should read it? Fan of dystopian who wants a twist from the norm (you know the norm dystopian since dystopian is a twist from the norm...). Who shouldn't read it? Overly sensitive people? I don't know I think it's pretty mainstream friendly.

Freestyle Friday 6 - Dystopian

#FF #freestylefriday

It seems that Dystopian novels are the most popular genre in Young Adult fiction. I must admit that I love them. It's a chance to explore a world that is similar to our own but one decision shaped it into something completely different. Some authors seem to rant or preach but all seem to have a message. If you do this then this "reality" may happen. So far I haven't gotten tired of dystopian novels and have many on my tbr list. They raise questions, can change your views, change your habits, or at the very least be a very entertaining read.

So what are your favs?

Blog Tour: Fury by Charlotte McConaghy

FURY

Fury: Book 1 of The Cure by Charlotte McConaghy
348 pages, Published March 25th, 2014 by Momentum Books, Pan Macmillan

In the tradition of Divergent comes a novel about a world where negative emotions are stolen ... and only those with fury can stand up and fight.

Eighteen-year-old Josephine Luquet wakes naked and covered in blood that is not hers on the same day every year—when the blood moon is full. Josi has not responded to the "Cure"—an immunization against anger mandated by the government—and believes herself to be a threat to others.

Then she meets Luke. Luke has had the Cure but seems different to the other "drones"—and he's dead set on helping Josi discover the truth about herself before the next blood moon.

But time is running out. Is Luke willing to risk his life to be near her? Does he truly understand what violence she is capable of?

Raw and full of passion, Fury is a story of love in a dystopian world, and how much we are willing to forgive in the struggle to remember our humanity.

My Review
I liked the story. As if you didn't know that, I am pretty good at picking book I think I may like. This is maybe the 4th book I have read where the powers that be are trying to rid the people of emotion. Unfortunatley, these scenerios are not as far fetch as one would hope. Maybe it's just me but I could see a future where the government tries to have the "perfect society. Anyway...

The characters are good. They draw you in. The story-line keeps your intention.  It was a medium paced book for me. There were parts where it lagged for me. All in all a good read.

Should you read it? Yes. Who should read it? Fans of dystopian.

Discussion with WRI: Getting Lost In A Book

@NicoleMHewitt @ShannonMiz #LetsDiscuss2016

This is how I get lost in dystopian fiction mostly of the ya a genre.

I saw a topic going around about how a reader get lost in a book. I decide to chime in. So here goes. 80% of my reads have been young adult. Dystopian being my favorite sub genre. I have seen comments where people say that can't imagine some of these worlds.

I go into reading a dystopian novel like this. I read the synopsis not to find out what the book is about but to get a sense of the setting that way I get my mind ready. So once I started the book I'm imagining that I am already living in this setting. It is where I lived. I is what I have experienced. Going into a book this way helps you not to thinking about if this setting/world could actual exist. You are shutting down the left side of your brain and letting that right side take over.

All aspects of a book is important. If one is severely lacking in impacts the entire feel of the book. With that said, I love a character driven novel. I want to connect with at least one character. I either need to feel like I am the character, a friend of the character, or even a invisible force following along. My mind take the words and those words become motion. I can see what I am reading. If I feel like I'm reading a 5 star rating is already lost.

That is it. I go into a book with the mindset that whatever is happening in the book is happening for real.

Your turn: How do you get lost in a book?

Blog Tour: Mirror X by Karri Thompson

@KarriThompson @NereydaG1003 @Bunnitaz #giveaway #blogtour #worthreadingit

Mirror X (The Van Winkle Project #1) by Karri Thompson Release Date: 06/30/14
Entangled Teen
Rating 3 stars

Summary from Goodreads:

Cassie Dannacher wakes up in a hospital over 1,000 years into the future after her space capsule is retrieved from space. She soon learns that 600 years prior to her arrival, the earth was struck by a plague, killing over half of the world’s population. Naïve and desperate, Cassie, who longs for home and is having trouble adjusting to the new, dictatorial 31st century government, is comforted by Michael Bennett, the 20-year old lead geneticist at the hospital where she was revived.

But why is Cassie in genetics’ hospital in the first place, and why do several of the people around her seem so familiar, including Travel Carson, the hot and edgy boy she is fated to meet? Soon she discovers there is a sinister answer to all of her questions – and that they want something from Cassie that only she can give.

My Review:
I'm happy to be kicking our this tour so let's get into it. This book was not what I was expecting. Actually I don't really know what I was expecting. Cassie wakes up a thousand years later to find out that everyone she has ever know has died. The world has changed so drastically and now she is told that she is the key to saving all of humanity. Talk about a quilt trip. I do not envy Cassie at all.

This is a medium paced book. It is slowed down by the world building. Once you read this book ask the question what I do if I was in this situation. I'm not sure what I would have done but I know I would have been more upset than she was and that would be with everyone. I felt like she gave in too easily. This novel goes along with the trend of dystopian novels where there has been some devastating event and the resulting world is perfect on the surface but underside is quite ugly. In the end, I have mixed feelings about this. I like it but the reactions was a bit off for me at times. Honestly, at times I was downright pissed off. That is why this book gets a 3 star rating. It may not have been what i wanted but the fact that I was pissed means I was involved in the story.

Should you read it? Yes. Who should read it? Fans of dystopian.
