Q: What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

Freaking cliffhangers! A great series is a book that leaves you wanting the read the next one but can also stand on its own. I should anticipate the next book but I should also be left satisfied with the ending of the book I just read.

  1. Hi there! I like your answer. As an author, these kinds of questions give me an insight as to what readers prefer. And it certainly helps to know!!

  2. Hopping through. I love cliffhangers when I have the next book ready to read. Otherwise, they're hard to handle.

  3. Oh, I agree with your points. I don't care for cliffhangers, but mostly I hate anything that happens due to coincidence. I like logical steps to a conclusion.

  5. I actually like cliffhangers, but only if they're awesome. I hate really bad, contrived cliffies.

I'm so divided on cliffhangers! I suppose it depends how they're done.

  9. Hi all thanks for commenting and following. I'm following back as we speak.

I know there are many people who love suspense and cliffhangers. I like knowing the end even if it's an ending I didn't expect or want. Cliffhangers leave me restless especially since you can never be sure if the next book will actually come out...life happens.

  14. While I totally understand your point, as a writer, I'm going to have to take a stand in defense of cliffhangers. I know they're annoying--trust me, I've been there--but a good cliffhanger also ENSURES--not just probably--that readers will pick up the next book. So, I get it. But try not to be too hard on us authors just trying to make a living. :D Great answer. New follower here via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  15. Thanks to everyone for stopping by. Just reading a series makes many of us read the next book. Especially someone like me. But if I read a book and nothing is resolved. Everything is left up in the air. I'm pissed and I probably won't read the next one. I feel cheated. The main plot needs to be resolved for me. I'm I making sense? o_O

  16. HI! New follower here. Cliffhangers are also one of my pet peeves. If the main conflict of the book is wrapped up and the cliffhanger is about a new conflict then I don't usually throw the book across the room ;)

Also, I am giving away a Kindle or Nook (winners choice) on my blog if you are interested. The contest ends in 1 day!
