Summary:
Twice a year, the alien Lord Toric demands a selection of human women between the ages of 18 and 20 to compete in the Tournament of the Offered for a place in his harem. Maya must get through just one more selection and then she can marry the man of her dreams. She should have been safe, but when a young woman who was supposed to compete dies the day of the selection, Maya is forced into the Tournament.

Now she must compete against women who have been training for the Tournament for years to hone their skills of poise, charm, cunning, and seduction. And there is only one winner in the Tournament. The losers will be sacrificed.

Thrown into the fight of her life with no preparation, Maya must shed her innocence and win Lord Toric’s favor. Will she survive the first round, or will she pay the ultimate price for her inexperience?

My Review:

This had a couple of surprises in this. It kept my interest all the way through though. I like how Maya is strong but not stupidly so. You know the stupid strong type right? The one who won't accept any help ending up in an even more dangerous situation.

So what is this book about? It is at least a thousand years in the future. Earth is now called Earthenfell. Aliens battle for control of the planet. One alien race has come forward to help those on Earthrenfell but the exchange is servititude. Also twice a year each clan must submit someone to leave the planet forver to directly serve the overlords.

Maya's clan had someone chosen for years but she dies the day of the ceremony. Now someone has to be chosen from a drawing and unfortunately Maya name gets pulled. She is faced with the fact that she must leave home and fight for her life to win favor with the overlord.

Lord Toric doesn't exactly agree with the way the Earthenfells have to fight to the death but it is a tradition he has no control over. Thankfully or Maya he has an immediate reaction to her. Unfornately for Maya, others has suspect his fondness for her. It makes for a situation thast is complicated for both.

There are a few surprises like where did the alien lord and his people really come from. I went into this read iffy but I end up liking it. This ends in cliffhanger. And I find myself wanting to know what happens next. I'm not sure how to categorize this. Dystopian because it is a future Earth. Sci-fi because if the alien aspect. I think this is one of those ones you just have to try and see where it goes. So with that...Happy Reading!
